Yacht America’s Journey South

Yacht America successfully visited 100+ Yacht Clubs on her journey south from Maine. She encountered some of the nicest people. Troy Sears spoke to at least 100,000 people, sharing his love of the America’s Cup and sailing in general. For many, sailing on the Yacht America built confidence. It also sparked an interest to continue the legacy of technology and sailing and what the America’s Cup is all about.

Yacht America Visits America’s Hometown

As the Yacht America started her journey south from Maine, her wanted to visit as many yacht clubs to achieve her mission: get people excited about sailing and educate sailors about the America’s Cup. The Yacht America and her crew were thrilled to get a call from Mary Shields. She asked Captain Troy Sears if he would bring the Yacht America to Plymouth, America’s Hometown. He was very happy to oblige. The event not only promoted sailing, but it was also for a good cause. Part of the proceeds went towards restoring the Mayflower II. We look forward to the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage in 2020. Yacht America’s Tour: Cape Hatteras to New York

As the Yacht America rounded the treacherous Cape Hatteras, she luckily enjoyed calm seas. She sailed peacefully through the night and morning. Captain Troy even thought, “This will be an easy last leg. Maybe we will arrive early!”  Then, the winds started to build. The forecast predicted winds of 10 knots, but the crew saw winds of 15 knots. Then the forecast predicted 15 knots, and the crew saw 20 knots. The forecast then predicted 20 knots, but the crew saw 25 knots. This continued over a six hour period. Eventually, the forecast switched to a small craft advisory as the winds were well over 25 knots. The national weather forecast also kept changing. Captain Troy received a satellite text that read: National Weather Service issues “Gale Warning, a Nor’easter.” For those of us who don’t know what that means,…
