Complete Guide to Point Loma & Ocean Beach

a large body of water

Ocean Beach and Point Loma are two of the most popular SoCal locations. Ocean Beach is a great place to surf and swim. There’s even a dog beach. Although Point Loma has no real beaches, plenty of activities are available inside and out. Here’s how to get the most out of your trip to Point Loma and Ocean Beach.

Getting There

If you’re driving from San Diego, take the I-8 freeway west. You can also take a cable car or bus to the area inexpensively. Parking is often at a premium, so public transportation to Point Loma can be much more affordable.

Getting Around

Once you’re in Ocean Beach or Point Loma, you can walk between many of the best locations if you’re so inclined. If you drive around, pay attention to the signs because the cliffs can get dangerous. One of the best ways to get around is to rent a bicycle or tandem to enjoy the fresh air without wearing out the soles of your shoes.

Hotels to Stay At

Ocean Beach hotels have some of the best views in San Diego, but they can get pricey. Point Loma hotels tend to be less expensive but still just as lovely. Whether you’re looking for luxury suites or budget rooms, you’ll have a variety.

Activities to Do

The best of Point Loma is Cabrillo National Monument. Take in California history while enjoying stunning panoramic views of San Diego and the coastline. Watch long enough; you may even spot gray whales in the ocean. Don’t miss the Pier in Ocean Beach, which extends a half mile into the ocean. You can fish without a fishing license, enjoy the surf and sand, and take in some sun.

Point Loma has Liberty Public Market, a great open-air market where you can find food, produce, and music on the weekends. The Ocean Beach Farmers Market is only on Wednesdays, but you’ll get a local taste of art, music, and produce. You’ll find dozens of local stores with a bohemian vibe for weekly shopping.

If you enjoy outdoor concerts, check out Humphreys Half Moon Inn. It’s an intimate venue with only a few hundred seats. Get dinner and a show, or enjoy the concert. Winstons Beach Club is a live music venue just two blocks from the beach. Check out the monthly calendar before you make plans to visit.

Bars & Restaurants to Attend

If you love seafood, San Diego is one of the best places in the nation to visit. Avoid chain restaurants in Point Loma and go where the locals go.

  • Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern – the best time to go – brunch. Sit on the outdoor patio and get something made with local seafood.
  • Bali Hai – known for its Mai Tais and buffet.
  • Old Venice – a cozy Italian restaurant with live music on weekends.
  • Hodad’s – is considered one of Ocean Beach’s and San Diego’s best places to get a burger.
  • Mike’s Taco Club – SoCal fish tacos at their best.

Get Out on the Water

Walking around Point Loma and Ocean Beach is a great way to enjoy the San Diego vibe, but getting out on the water on a whale-watching tour is the best way to get more out of your San Diego vacation. You’ll see lots of marine wildlife, including whales, dolphins, and seals. You can also enjoy the picturesque coastline from a different vantage point. Looking back at the city from the ocean brings it all into perspective.
